Lighten it up

So I know my posts have been pretty heavy lately, so here's a less depressing one for all of you.

I decided to make an old family favorite, Better Than Sex cake (am I even allowed to write that word?). If you haven't had the pleasure of trying it...you really should. I dare say there's a very good chance it lives up to it's name.

Brad is going to kill me :) haha.

Seriously, though... It's 8 o'clock at night and you're exhausted. You're covered in baby spit and macaroni and cheese. You haven't showered in two days. You FINALLY plop down on the couch and put your feet up. What do you really want? To use more energy for a few minutes (cross your fingers) of real life, unromantic, I'm-too-tired-but-I'm-doing-it-anyway husband/wife relations, OR to have a huge piece of decadent chocolate cake, dripping with condensed milk, hot fudge, whipped cream and toffee bits and the only thing you've got to move is your hand to your mouth?

I dare say I know the answer.

Hey, don't get me wrong. It's been a long time since there's been ANY type of relations going on with me (is that too much information? my bad), and I'm not trying to bad mouth the glory that is sex. I'm just saying that once you reach a certain point in your life (like 8 months after you get married...or...less...), you might just have to face the reality that your priorities may have changed.

And cake is at the top of them.

So, back to the story. You pour condensed milk all through this cake once it's out of the oven, which gives it this shiny, gooey goodness. I had been trying to think of a different name for this cake, since I definitely do not want my three year old learning the word sex--in any context. She is awesome at picking the quietest, most innapropriate times to say things like, "I have a penis," which is ridiculous because of course she doesn't. haha. I do not want to add another embarrassing word to her repertoire. I can just picture her in the middle of church, throwing a fit because she wants a treat, and (referring to the cake) yelling, "I WANT SEX!" Yeah, we're going to avoid that.

Anyway, I put her piece in front of her and she looks disgusted and scrunches up her face and asks, "Are there boogers in this cake?"

Apparently the shiny/cream colored condensed milk looked like boogers to her. And I laughed. And told her yes.

And then we ate our Booger Cake.

I love that cake! But i've never made it with condensed milk. I'll have to try it. You should post the recipe you use. And let's be honest sometimes it really just is BETTER!!

Nikki (Have Joy) said...

Requel, if you click the "Better Than Sex Cake" (in purple font) on the post, it is actually a link to the recipe, which is really similar to the one I use. The only difference is the linked recipe calls for butterscotch topping, and I use hot fudge instead. Other than that, it's the recipe I use. TRY IT. The condensed milk is the best part! I'll be waiting for the report.

HA HA! Nikki, I love you! And yes, it really is good. Even Aaron might argue that the cake lives up to its name, it's his very favorite and he's a man, what man doesn't think sex is the only thing that constitutes happiness? Booger Cake is definitely more kid friendly, for sure.

i mix the can of condensed milk with a jar of caramel ice cream topping and pour it over a chocolate cake, let it cool, put whipped topping and toffee bits on top and we call it "better than most other cakes-cake.." (: it's easier for kids and less hard to explain! I love it too and try not to make it often because I could honestly eat one all by myself!

Ok, so i actually made this cake last week when we had the missionaries over for dinner. They taste the cake and then start talking about how good it is and what not. Then I just blurt out..it's better then sex cake. Then it's just silent, like crikets chirping silent. One of the Elders was blushing. One of then said, well I woudn't know about that. haha...then I was like, no, that's what the cake is called!

Jacob then says "it was obiviously named by a women."

Talk about making out Elders feel welcome at dinner time. haha

Good times.

It's so true! You are hilarious, I haven't laughed that hard in awhile. Andrew and his brother are in the other room watching a playoff game-boring-and asked me what was so funny. I replied Nikki's post about btsc and they gave me a mocking laugh, apparently they didn't think it was too funny. Poor sports, but seriously that cake sounds so much better...

Okay, I had that cake in college and have never forgotten it!! I really need to make it again for old time sake. Thanks for the recipe!

So, I was catching up on your blog and read that you are writing a book... do tell me more... on what? That is so great. You always have such great thoughts so compiling it all in a book will be awesome!

Again, Nik, this is a literary masterpiece! Seriously. I love this one! Beautifully written, and so true (though not for me & my significant other...). Maybe. :)

Anyway, you're definitely holding your own in the writing department!

Oh boy...either bloglines is WAY behind on updating or you have been up to some serious blogging girl! YEAH for me and the rest of your fans. *side note: this comment is meant for this and the other 8 posts I just read so It'll be pretty random!*
Oh where do I begin. I am so full of emotions right now. You are seriously amazing. You know just want to say and when to say it. I love that you are so real. I think the problem with blogland is that people only post about the fun times, making everyone think that their life if that fluffy cloud kind of life, while the people reading are wondering what happened to theirs. I love that you make me feel like it is okay to be human. It is okay to think that Better than Sex Cake is better than sex...a majority of the time!
Thank you for opening my eyes to the fact that my life pitty parties are very minor compared to the hurt, loss, suffering etc. that people are going through on a daily basis. I couldn't imagine loosing a very close loved one such as a husband. My heart goes out to that family.
It was so fun to see the guys reunion picture! Some of the guys haven't changed a bit.
I am honored that my name adornes your post! I kind of thought that you might be mad at me...so I am a happy to know otherwise! Comments truly make blogging worth it huh. I would truly enjoy reading your new blog, make sure to share the link!

Seriously this makes my day in OH so many ways!!! And I think I'd have to agree with the statement about priorities and cake definately has risen higher on my list than sex has, thus making is stay that way after I eat the cake and don't ever want to be naked again. And Tay as always takes quote of the day! I love that girl!

You are such an amazing person Nikki. I'm one of those people who stumbled upon your blog from a friend of a friend. I enjoy reading your posts and the words you share with us. Thank you for being a strength to those you don't even know.

Nikki that was one of the most hilarious posts ever! You should seriously think about writing a book about the funny things we experience as parents. You are so good at writing and I would totally buy it! Seriously!

I think you should be in charge of renaming the cake. Maybe something like... Better than sex once you've been married for 8 months... or less... cake?

I would guess that old sabotage boyfriend even on a magical flying pony in dreamcicle land would have to know VooDoo to change the name of that cake?

If not, can you introduce me to him? :)

...I'm serious.

HAHA! Okay, I am loving all the comments on this one! I debated all day about whether to edit this post, and finally decided to just leave it as it is. And I'm glad I did!! I was worried some of you might be offended...but hey, this is real life for me, so take it as it is :). I'm glad you all appreciated it!

Lisa, who is your friend who you think knows me? I'm not sure what type of things you're going through right now, but I am currently in the middle of a divorce...so maybe that is why your friend gave you the link to this blog.

Jessica, I totally should write a funny book. That would be so much fun! I'm currently writing a book on divorce, which is not quite as fun, but hopefully will be really helpful to people who are going through similar situations I am. I will keep the funny book idea in mind and you will be the first to know if I decide to do it :)

Kami, I miss you, girl! Let's hook Ethan and Taylen up. :)

Tiffani, I can just see you sitting at your computer laughing about how much you like cake better than sex. haha! Funny comment.

Karli, oooh...mixing the condensed milk with caramel topping sounds yummy! I'll have to try that next time.

Julia, I totally laughed when I read your post! Like, crickets chirping silent. haha! awesome. I'm so excited to see you soon!

Chantri...why in the world would I be mad at you!? I have been meaning forever to get back to your email, because I really wanted to talk to you about some of the things you brought up, but I keep waiting until I have a chunk of time to write you back, and I just never have a chunk of time! I'm so glad you keep reading my blog, and I hope you keep commenting now that you know I am in NO WAY mad at you! haha. And I'm glad you liked the reuinion picture...funny how most of them look the exact same. Also funny that we know some of the same people, but have never actually met. Blogging is awesome :)

And Better-than-sex-cake is totally my favorite... I've also heard it called Celestial Cake. I guess it depends where youre at "intimately", ha ha... You are such a breathe of fresh air. I seriously wish we could hang out more together. I could use your influence more in my life. I guess I'll just have to settle for your blog posts and seeing you on Sundays. Guess I'm luckier than most, I can actually ask you in person for your autograph- ha,ha. You're famous now you know that right?!

Nikki (Have Joy) said...

Wait, I'm famous? Why? And why didn't I know about this sooner?

Ok, who in the heck is the Anonymous calling me "kiddo" and talking about my pretty smile? haha. I've obviously known you for a while, and I've got a few guesses, but I need some clues. Game on.

I'll tell you who it's NOT but you may think it IS. Clues as to who it's NOT:

Metamucil
Team Building Exercise '99
Good Good Good
Really Really Really

And a million other things.

Seriously, would I ever call you "kiddo?" Huh-uh.

But I am getting quite sleepy...

Who's this "NOT anonymous" person? Get your own web alias. Anonymous is taken :)

For now...I'll change to anonymousse. Creativity is a strength.

Who don't you want anonymousse to not be? (doub. neg.)

Nikki (Have Joy) said...

Okay, you two anonymouses...anonymice...haha... whatever the plural of that word is.

Not Anonymous-- I know who you are. You should start posting under the name Metamucil. Still some web privacy, but I know who the post is coming from. Deal?

Anonymousse--I'm still confused as to why you're anonymously posting. You obviously know me, and it sounds like you have for a while. But whatever floats your boat. Let's start the clues: male or female?

Anonymous said...

Keep it real, Nikki. You'll do great at whatever you do.
-Anonymousse.

Nikki (Have Joy) said...

Okay, anonymousse. You would like to remain a mystery. Got it. I'll quit bugging you about who you are.

For now :)

Thanks for the nice comments, and I hope you keep checking in every once in a while...

Nikki, that was a great post! So funny! But, I’m perplexed as to which is better- sex or better than sex cake (although I can’t help but say that sex wins in my books…except of course during these last few postpartum weeks..who wants to even think of sex after just having a baby, ha, ha!). Nonetheless, why should one have to choose? Why not have both together…well not at the exact same time because that would be difficult, but why not have sex, then better than sex cake afterward! Now that’s what I’m talking about! Ha, ha! It brings a whole new meaning to the saying: “Have your cake and eat it too”. Ha, ha!

Cheers,
Caroline

Nikki (Have Joy) said...

HAHAHAHA! Caroline, you get the prize for best idea! Why not have your cake and eat it too? High five for that idea. Too bad my only option is literally the cake right now. haha. Awesome. Thanks for that funny comment!

I have to admit that I am one of your blog stalkers and I haven't commented yet because I didn't feel like I really had anything to say but this one killed me. I am still wiping away the tears from laughing. I have been married six months and already know what you mean. I haven't had this cake since Rick's college, I think it is time to have some. Thanks. And by the way your girls are beautiful.

Nikki (Have Joy) said...

Hahaha! Amy..Okay, I think it's so funny that you were actually crying laughing at this post! I love it. I'm glad you finally had something to say! Thanks for your comment, and the compliment about my girls...I definitely agree with you :) Hope to hear from you more!

I love this post, but more so I love the fact that little Tay would scream "I want sex" in the middle of sacrament. I would pay to see that. Mostly cause when she is older and married she will never be yelling "I want sex". At least not after 8 months right!

Mrs.Smith said...

Naughty, naughty... But very funny. And clearly most enjoyed by most everyone. I feel so blessed to be married to a guy who doesn't like milk chocolate, but who Does like me to like... um... well, yeah. Anyway, the point is, a cake like that would be ALL for me! Woo-hoo!
